Best Sunset Spots in Naples (and How to Time Them)

Very few American cities have an unobstructed western horizon over water and a culture built around going to see it. Naples has both. Sunset here is a civic event: people leave dinner tables, stop cars, and stand on the sand in silence for ten minutes.

Time it properly

The mistake is arriving at sunset. The color show runs roughly from 25 minutes before the sun touches the water until about 20 minutes after it disappears — and the best of it, the deep coral and violet phase, happens after everyone with a camera has already walked back to the car.

   The classic. Elevated, open on three sides, pelicans overhead. In season, arrive 40 minutes early for a rail spot.

   Same sun, more room, restrooms and a place to leave your things. Best with kids.

   Delnor-Wiggins Pass State Park

   North Naples

   Lot 1 at the northern pass. Dunes, no buildings in frame, and a current running out to the Gulf. Note the park's closing time.

   North Naples

   Garage parking means you can arrive at 6:15 in February and still make it. Beach bars behind you.

   Reflected sky on still lagoon water — the best mirror in the county — plus roosting shorebirds.

   The sun sets straight down the pass. From a boat you get the whole horizon and the pass light behind you.

   Not a Gulf sunset, but the eastern sky over the river turns pink and it's ninety seconds from Fifth Avenue.

If you only do one thing in Naples that costs money, do this one. On land you watch the sunset; on the water you sit inside it. The Gulf goes flat in the last hour of the day, the light comes off the surface as well as the sky, and dolphins habitually work the pass on the outgoing tide.

Sunset departures book out first in season, so this is the one thing worth arranging before you arrive. Group cruises leave from Tin City and the city dock on a fixed timetable; if you'd rather set your own pace and stop where the light is good, a small sunset charter out of Naples Bay covers the same water without the schedule.

The green flash

It's real, it's rare, and Naples gets it a few times a month. You need a sharp, cloudless horizon and clean air — usually after a front passes in winter. Watch the very last sliver of sun without a camera in the way; the flash lasts under two seconds.
