Free Things to Do in Naples, Florida

You can spend a lot of money in this town very easily. You can also spend three days here and pay for nothing but a parking space, and the days will be better than most people's.

The obvious ones, done properly

1. 01Sunset at the Pier. Free, iconic, and busy. Arrive forty minutes early and walk to the end.
2. 02Walk the Gordon Drive beach access paths. Numbered accesses along Gulf Shore Boulevard put you on the quietest sand in the city.
3. 03Baker Park and the Gordon River Greenway. Two and a half miles of boardwalk and path through riverfront hammock, minutes from downtown.
4. 04Third Street South at dusk. Courtyards, live music drifting out of the restaurants, and no obligation to sit down.
5. 05Naples Botanical Garden's free days. Occasional and worth watching the calendar for.
6. 06The Naples Historical Society's Palm Cottage grounds. The oldest house in the city, and the exterior costs nothing.

Beaches that don't cost anything to reach

Every beach in Naples is public below the high-water line. The variable is parking. Metered spaces line Gulf Shore Boulevard and fill by 10am in season; the county beach parks charge by the hour. Free options: the residential accesses if you can find street parking legally, arriving before 8am, or cycling in — Naples is flat and the beach path network is excellent.

Outdoors, no ticket required

• Clam Pass boardwalk — three-quarters of a mile through mangrove to the Gulf. Parking is paid; the boardwalk is not.
• Freedom Park — wetland boardwalks, alligators, and a birdlife list longer than most paid attractions.
• Delnor-Wiggins shoreline at the north end — walk in from the Vanderbilt side and skip the entry queue.
• Shelling after a winter front — the best haul of the year washes up free, usually the morning after a hard northwest blow.
• Sugden Regional Park — lake, paths, free events in season.

Free-ish: the honest section

Some Naples classics are free to attend but not free to arrive at. The Third Street South farmers market costs nothing to browse and everything to leave empty-handed. Beach parking is the recurring tax on a free day. And the water — the sandbars, the islands, the mangrove tunnels — is the one part of Naples with no free version at all: Keewaydin has no bridge, so the cheapest way onto it is a shuttle seat, and the practical way is splitting a small charter across a group, which for four people lands near the cost of a nice dinner.

A free day, sequenced

1. 017:30am — beach walk from a residential access while parking is still open and the light is low.
2. 029:30am — Gordon River Greenway boardwalk before the heat.
3. 03Noon — packed lunch at Baker Park under the oaks.
4. 042pm — Freedom Park wetland loop, or the library's Florida room if it's raining.
5. 055pm — Third Street South courtyards, window-shopping and live music.
6. 06Sunset — the Pier. Every time.
