Rainy Day Things to Do in Naples

From June through September, the pattern is remarkably consistent: clear mornings, cloud building inland by noon, a violent thunderstorm somewhere between two and five, then a washed, gold-lit evening. It rarely rains all day. Plan water for the morning and you'll barely notice.

   One of the world's great automobile collections, presented as scholarship rather than spectacle. Timed tickets, book ahead.

   East Naples

   170 acres. Much of it is outdoors, but the conservatory and café make it workable in light rain — and the gardens are extraordinary in a drizzle.

   East of downtown

   Working studios, galleries and the city's most interesting food, all under cover.

   Naples Depot & Holocaust Museum

   Downtown

   Two small, serious museums within a few blocks of Fifth Avenue South.

For kids

• Golisano Children's Museum of Naples (C'mon) — the default answer, and a good one, for under-tens.
• Sun-N-Fun Lagoon — a water park; rain is irrelevant unless there's lightning, which closes it.
• Naples Zoo — open in rain, and the animals are often more active. Bring ponchos rather than umbrellas.
• Mercato and Coastland Center — cinemas, bowling and indoor time when nothing else will do.

Things that are better in the rain

• Corkscrew Swamp boardwalk — a cypress swamp in soft rain is an experience most visitors never have. Poncho, not umbrella.
• A long lunch on a covered courtyard patio — Third Street South does this exceptionally well.
• The beach immediately after a storm — washed sand, driven shells, empty shoreline, and often a spectacular sky.

If it's a genuine wash-out

Multi-day rain in Naples comes from a stalled front in winter or a tropical system in late summer. In winter it's usually cool and grey rather than stormy, and everything indoors stays open. In a tropical system, follow local emergency guidance and don't plan around the boat trip. Summer storms here are usually short and local — mornings often stay clear, which is why half-day boat trips tend to run early and be back on the dock before the afternoon cell builds.
