Naples with Kids: A Three-Day Itinerary That Works

The Gulf here shelves so gradually that a four-year-old can wade a hundred feet out and still be at their waist, and it sits at bath temperature from May through October. Combine that with 20-minute drive times and you get a family destination that doesn't require much management.

Day 1 — Beach and pier

1. 018:30am — Lowdermilk Park. Restrooms, showers, playground, shade and a snack bar, all in one place. Claim a shade structure early.
2. 0212:30pm — Lunch nearby, then back to the rental for the hot part of the afternoon.
3. 034:00pm — Walk the beach north to Naples Pier. Look for pelicans, watch the fishing lines, buy an ice cream.
4. 04Sunset — Stay on the sand rather than the pier deck with small children. Same view, more room to run.

Day 2 — Animals and mangroves

1. 019:00am — Naples Zoo at Caribbean Gardens. Compact, genuinely well done, and built inside a 1919 botanical garden. The primate boat ride is the highlight for under-tens.
2. 0212:30pm — Lunch and a break.
3. 033:30pm — Clam Pass boardwalk. Take the tram in if legs are short, walk back out. Fiddler crabs, herons, mullet jumping in the creek.
4. 04Evening — Dinner outdoors on Fifth Avenue South, where nobody minds a loud table.

Day 3 — On the water

This is the day kids remember. A short bay cruise works for toddlers; anyone over about six is better served by a trip that actually stops — a sandbar to stand on, a shell beach to comb, dolphins alongside.

For a family, a private boat is often the practical choice rather than the extravagant one: you set the departure time around naps, you can leave when someone's had enough, and there's no scheduled route to keep to. A two-hour private trip through the bay and pass is usually plenty for young children; save the half-day version for teenagers.

• Confirm the operator carries child life jackets in your kids' sizes before booking.
• Morning departures are flatter water — better for anyone prone to motion sickness.
• Bring more water and more sunscreen than you think, plus a towel per child.

Rainy day and hot-afternoon backups

• Golisano Children's Museum of Naples (C'mon) — excellent, and the default answer for under-eights when it rains.
• Naples Botanical Garden — the children's garden and water play area are genuinely good.
• Sun-N-Fun Lagoon — a proper county water park; a whole afternoon.
• Revs Institute — an extraordinary car collection; teenagers and adults, timed tickets.

Eating with children

Eat early — 5:30pm — and eat outside. Fifth Avenue South and Tin City both have plenty of patio seating, and in high season the difference between 5:30 and 7:00 is a table now versus a 50-minute wait. Most kitchens will do a plain grouper or a plate of pasta on request even without a kids' menu.
